Top Search Tips From UKeiG

UKeiG, the UK eInformation Group, is a professional body for users and developers of electronic information resources.
This is a good post with some quality tips for web searching..

Making The Most Of The Web

A useful piece from Seb Schmoller about making best use of the web and its resources.
I particularly like the points about collaboration, using social bookmarking (you lose so much less this way) and using your library, because it's not always on the web!

Summer borrowing

Although many students will be moving on to pastures new in the next few weeks, some of you may wish to come in and use the Library service over the summer break, in order to prepare for continued studies in August. If this is the case then please get in touch with your student advisor who can pass your name and student number on to us and we will set up summer borrowing on your behalf.

During the summer months the Library continues to open on holiday hours. These are listed below.

Microsoft Office

As you know Microsoft Office is available on all of the computers in the College, but did you know that you can use it at home, for free? All students have access to MyUHI, a service accessible through the UHI website by entering your student number and password . Once you have done this you have access to your personal College drive and can access Microsoft Office 2007 and 2003 from whichever computer you are using!

If you already have Office 2007 at home you will also be glad to hear that the College computers have new software on them which will allow you to open the documents you worked on at home, in the College.

Grove Music Online

Grove Music Online is currently being redesigned and will be re-launched as part of a bigger resource - Oxford Music Online. This will give you access to The Oxford dictionary of music and The Oxford companion to music in addition to the large amount of content on Grove currently. This changeover will happen in the next couple of months and you will be able to continue to access Grove through the Library website.

Journals Search

If you want to search across all the UHI resources (EBSCO, JSTOR, Science Direct etc) without logging in to each individual resource, you can now do this.
The CASE A-Z list allows you search and browse for particular journals and resources.
Once you've found what you're looking for, you can click on the link to get access. In some cases, you may need to login via the usual Athens route (i.e. follow the UHI Millenium Institute links from 'Alternative Login').
In other cases, you may need to take a note of the journal provider, and log in to the resource via the usual route.
A guide to logging in to Athens resources is available here.

The Learning Cafe

The Learning Cafe opened for business last week.

It's a comfotable, stylish, informal learning space where you can relax with a Costa coffee and bun, browse the journals and newspapers, use college computers, login to the college network with your own laptop, or just chill out and have a chat with your friends.

Why not pop in and have a look today?

Amazon Listmania!

Alan Scott (Creative Industries, Goodlyburn) has started using Amazon Listmania to list books he recommends for student use, and also highlighting those that are available in Perth College Library.
Which is a seriously good idea!
You can visit Alan's list spot on Amazon here.

Most of these books are available for 28 day loan, and you can renew books online yourself, via the library catalogue.

You're more than welcome to come in and browse the stock, and borrow what you need. Have a coffee in the learning cafe whilst you're at it!

New Title: Do Ants Have Arseholes?

How easy is it to fall off a log? Where is the middle of nowhere? Do we really have no bananas? The readers of OLD GIT magazine are a batty, befuddled, potty-mouthed bunch, who seem to spend a significant chunk of their spare time corresponding with the publication's popular letters page. DO ANTS HAVE ARSEHOLES? is a very funny, very silly collection of questions and answers taken from this column, none of which has any basis whatsoever in fact. A must for all those who relish a heady mixture of shaggy-dog stories, toilet humour and utter lack of insight.
